College of Saint Rose Voice Modification Program
The College of Saint Rose Voice Modification Program was developed in 2007, and group therapy with clients began in 2008. The College determined that services for transsexuals were in high demand.
Student clinicians provide the voice therapy with supervision by a licensed speech-language pathologist. The voice modification program focuses on the four following areas:
Reflective Listening - Each therapy session begins with the clients sharing "communication experiences." They are able to express their experiences in a safe environment. The clients and therapists use reflective listening which includes using "encouragers, paraphrasing, and summarization" (Baker, 2010).
Vocal Function Exercises - These exercises strengthen the laryngeal musculature. The exercises include warm up of the vocal folds, stretching, contracting, and power exercises.
Skill Development - Skill development allows the client to practice changing voice quality and pitch, loudness, resonance, and other areas of language that will help the client's voice pass as sounding female.
Generalization and Transference - This step allows the clients to use their voice skills in a real life setting. The clients often provide a presentation to students of the college and other participants of the voice group.
A main focus of the program is for the client and clinician to build rapport. The clinician practices counseling skills and develop unique goals for each individual. Each client participates in seven lessons that are tailored to meet her needs (Baker, 2010). Click here to learn more about The College of Saint Rose Voice Modification Program.
